TIKAL TEMPLE 2 (left foreground) and TIKAL TEMPLE 4 (background) and TIKAL TEMPLE 35 of the Tikal North Acropolis as viewed from inside the Temple Portal atop TIKAL TEMPLE 1 in the Tikal Mayan Ruins in the Departamento de Petn in northern Guatemala on a overcast day in January 1988.

Tikal Temple 4 is the tallest temple-pyramid in Tikal National Park towering 230 feet from the temple plaza to the top of the roof comb. By comparison, Tikal Temple 1 is 154 feet tall and Tikal Temple 2 is 125 feet tall. Tikal Temple 4 is also the tallest temple-pyramid in the pre-Columbian monument in the New World at the present time, although several structures may have been taller in earlier times.

Tikal Temple 2 is also known as Templo de las Mascaras or Temple of the Masks.

Tikal Temple 1 is also known as Templo del Gran Jaguar or Temple of the Great Jaguar.

An unbroken expanse of lowland tropical forest extends off to the horizon.

For OPTIMAL VIEWING,
almost as though you were there, 23 years ago, standing inside the doorway of Temple 1, VIEW AT THE MUCH LARGER ORIGINAL SIZE (1199 x 750) with this direct Flickr link: www.flickr.com/photos/neotropical_birds_mayan_ruins/54695...
