Taormina - The beauty of nature

Image
Luigi FDV has added a photo to the pool: Isola Bella is a small island near Taormina, Sicily, southern Italy. Also known as The Pearl of the Ionian Sea, it is located within a small bay on the Ionian Sea; it was a private property until 1990, when it was bought by the Region of Sicily, being turned into a nature reserve, administrated by the Italian branch of the World Wide Fund for Nature. There is a narrow path that often connects the island to the mainland beach. The island has a small and rather rocky beach which is a popular destination for sunbathers. King Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies gifted the island to the nearby town of Taormina in 1806. The island was then bought from the town by a Ms. Trevelyan, who built a small house facing the sea and imported exotic plants, which thrived in the Mediterranean climate. Subsequent owners kept up the island, until the owner went bankrupt, and auctioned the island in 1990. The island had been noted by conservationists as early as 1983,

Castelo de Palmela

Image
retrorocketrick has added a photo to the pool: The most famous landmark in the whole region is Palmela Castle. The castle sits atop the highest hill in the area, at an altitude of 3937 ft (1200 metres) above sea level, at the edge of the Arrabida mountain range. Situated with magnificent views on a spur of the Serra da Arrbida, Palmela Castle is one of the finest examples of Portuguese military architecture, although the castle itself doesnt have any important architectural significance. Neither does it have any strong legends. Between the 8th and 12th centuries the whole area was dominate by the Moors. During its history the ownership of this castle passed through various hands as the Moors and Christian Kings fought for its strategic possession. Afonso I or Dom Afonso Henriques, the first King of Portugal , conquered the castle from the Moors with only sixty warriors. It was lost again in the continual back-and-forth fighting but was permanently recovered by Sancho I, nicknamed Sa

Havia milhares de caixas de grandes safras de vinhos, roubadas dos franceses, e obras de arte pilhadas de colecionadores judeus. Para chegar ao cofre no qual as relquias estavam guardadas, havia um elevador construdo na rocha, com poltronas

"I like this brand new grey wall"

Press 'L' to view this in Lightbox. Just down the hill from "La belle toile" in Lyon's historical Croix-Rousse district, I came across a building which was undergoing renovation. On the street-facing exterior wall was this set of seven clever words; it turns out I did like that brand new grey wall after all. See where this picture was taken. [?]

In Oman, the Omanisation programme has been in operation since 1988, working toward replacing expatriates with trained Omani personnel. Indians, pakistanis, flipinos, nepalese etc still work for building, housekeeping... Many of them live in the old quarters of the town. Catholic foreign workers are allowed to work in Oman. Expatriates form more than one-fourth of the 2 million population. Eric Lafforgue www.ericlafforgue.com

Rhythm of the Night

Image
potofclay has added a photo to the pool: Venice is quiet at night, with tour groups usually staying on the mainland (less expensive), and the masses of daytrippers returning to their bases. St. Mark's Square is one of many places to be after dark city. The strange phenomenon of dueling caf orchestras is at its peak. Every night, enthusiastic musicians from the various cafs entertain the square's wanderers by playing the same songs, "competing" for their attention. One can hang out behind the tables and chairs for free, or spring for a seat and end up spending 15-20 for some drinks and music. Hanging out in the back is not only free, but allows you to freely move on to the next caf orchestra when the musicians take a break or you need one. And oh, dancing on the square is encouraged, as you can see from the couple in the far right side. This is sort of another attempt at street photography. Besides, it's been awhile since my last b&w. Check out the outtakes
