Padlocks of Love

Image
potofclay has added a photo to the pool: In the Cinque Terre, there's a well-paved, mile-long, and easy hiking trail along the coast that connects Riomaggiore to Manarola called "Via Dell'Amore," or "Love Walk." Along the way, one will encounter, besides the gorgeous views, an area that's filled with padlocks. Legend has it that it was a meeting place for lovers from the two towns. Now, it's a site for tourists to place their locks and throw the keys into the sea. Apparently, these " love padlocks " are not unique to this site. A symbolism that I think can have two very different meaning... Coincidentally, my friend Mike just posted a similar shot of love padlocks that he took in China!

Northern Lights in Iceland

Image
mnapoli has added a photo to the pool: Northern Lights in Reykjavik, Iceland. That night, I witnessed the most intense auroras i've seen in Iceland. But my friends and I had dropped my car keys on the ground, so the time we spent looking for them the show was almost done. We did see some amazing things though. Auroras are also known as the Northern Lights. They are due to the solar wind coming from the Sun and stopped by the Earth magnetic field. They can show up in different colors depending of the altitude : green being the most common, they can be pink, red, yellow blue or white. You can witness these wonders of nature from September to April in Iceland. As the photo can't show, they are not moving really fast (just like clouds moving in the wind). If you live in Reykjavik and want to take pictures of Northern Lights, I highly recommend this location (see map) as you are close to the city, but no surrounded by any light, and you have the sea on each side.

Firenze - Piazza del Carmine - Palazzo Rospigliosi Pallavicini- particolare facciata

Image
luca1965 has added a photo to the pool: La sistemazione urbanistica di piazza del Carmine risale al 1330. Fonte Wikipedia.

"Ground Zero" from the series" The Vanished of Hiroshima"

Image
photosadhu has added a photo to the pool: One the morning of August 6, 1945 there were two suns over the Japanese city of Hiroshima. One was made by the hand of man. To our generation ground zero means New York City in September,2011. Before that fateful day ground zero most certainly implied the exact spot the first time an Atomic Bomb was used against humanity.

Barrybar has added a photo to the pool: Yesterday (30/01/2011) I visited the Museum of Natural History, a white building sitting at the end of Avenida Patrice Lumumba. Amazing is not a bad word to describe it. When I left, I walked the couple blocks to Avenida 24 de Julho and sat outside the Delta cafe, drinking a tonica (Schweppes). I cannot even explain the vendors here who do not take no for an answer. Well, I turned the tables on them in a manner of speaking. I saw this walking with this piece and it was I who beckoned to him. He said it cost 650 Meticales, about $20. I said 500 MT. He said 600 Mt. I hate to bargain, especially with artists and artisans. I liked the piece and bought it. I leave for Swaziland on Tuesday. Let's see what I find there.

Main armament - the Stevns Fort

Image
Thomas Roland has added a photo to the pool: The main armament of the fort was 4 pieces of 15 cm guns in two armoured turrets. The turrets were connected by the tunnel system. Originally the guns were placed as secondary armament on the WW2 German battleship Gneisenau. They are in perfect working condition even today.

Batsford Church

Image
Heaven`s Gate (John) has added a photo to the pool: St. Mary`s Church, Batsford village, The Cotswolds, England. St. Mary's Church was rebuilt by W.F. Poulton & Woodman of Reading in 1860-62, a late example of the Neo-Norman style. It is an expensive building, dramatically sited on steeply rising ground near the entrance to the drive of the mansion - Batsford Park. The church is of dressed stone, now re-roofed with machine-made tiles. The low tower has a spire with an octagonal drum, four large pinnacles, and cyclopean gabled spire-lights of French-Romanesque character. The chancel is apsidal with ribbed ashlar tunnel vaulting. The chancel arch is very ornate and has correct Anglo-Norman details. The font and pulpit introduce coloured marble into the Neo-Norman style of the church. There are stained glass windows by Kempe and several very ornate wall tablet memorials.
