Buddhism has a place in Burma's society that few other religions have elsewhere. It not only channels popular faith, and directly influences domestic politics, but also educates, feeds and supports millions, and represents a necessary pilgrimage for adults and children alike.

So far, Burma's Buddhism has operated in the closed circuit of Burma's isolation. Very little in lieu of influence from the outside world has reached Yangon, albeit Korean soap operas and pirated DVDs. How Buddhism will react to the ineluctable opening of the country will in my sense provide one of the most interesting cultural transformations of 21st century Asia.
