Where the Streets Have No Land

Besides the Grand Canal, across which the Rialto spans, there are smaller canals all over Venice. You can't walk for more than a minute without crossing one, except maybe if you're right in the middle of St. Mark's Square. Obviously, boats of all sizes and shapes, including gandolas, motorboats, and rowboats, are everywhere and a way of life. With no cars or automobiles of any kind, it truly is a unique city.
