PHODONG MONASTERY

Adorned by the ancient exquisite mural paintings, this monastery (1400m in altitude; 28km from Gangtok) is today one of the most beautiful Buddhist monasteries in Sikkim. It was built by the Chogyal Gyurmed Namgyal in 1740. It is then rebuilt and with 260 monks belongs to the Kargyupa sect (Karmapa).
Phodong Monastery also hosts an annual festival observed mostly in December with the Kagyed Chaam Dance performed by the monks along with religious rituals.
