Yangon (Burma) - Buddha love

Image
streetcorner has added a photo to the pool: Young monks walk out of the Shwedagon, Yangon's biggest pagoda - Yangon (Burma) ___________________________________________________________________ Buddhism has a place in Burma's society that few other religions have elsewhere. It not only channels popular faith, and directly influences domestic politics, but also educates, feeds and supports millions, and represents a necessary pilgrimage for adults and children alike. So far, Burma's Buddhism has operated in the closed circuit of Burma's isolation. Very little in lieu of influence from the outside world has reached Yangon, albeit Korean soap operas and pirated DVDs. How Buddhism will react to the ineluctable opening of the country will in my sense provide one of the most interesting cultural transformations of 21st century Asia. ___________________________________________________________________ Click here for the whole documentary, read the photomagazine here and

Where the Streets Have No Land

Image
potofclay has added a photo to the pool: Besides the Grand Canal, across which the Rialto spans, there are smaller canals all over Venice. You can't walk for more than a minute without crossing one, except maybe if you're right in the middle of St. Mark's Square . Obviously, boats of all sizes and shapes, including gandolas , motorboats, and rowboats, are everywhere and a way of life. With no cars or automobiles of any kind, it truly is a unique city. Gurudwara Bangla Sahib-Delhi

Image
The Canon Guy! has added a photo to the pool: This was taken by my Friend Ranjit using his Samsung Tab. Hence, the quality of this image is not that good. I've retouched using PS. -------- Gurudwara Bangla Sahib is situated in the heart of New Delhi's Cannaught Place area. It is loacted on the east side intersection of Ashok Road and Baba Kharag Singh Marg. Originally this place was the Bungalow(haveli) of Mirza Raja Jai Singh, hence the name Bangla Sahib. It's original name was Jaisinghpura Palace. Mirza Raja Jai Singh was an important military leader of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. After the passing away of Guru Har Rai the seventh Sikh Guru, Ram Rai and his masands(masand is derived from Arabic word masnad, meaning delegating authorotiy of the sovereign) instigated Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb to issue a decree summoning Guru Harkrishan to his court. Ram Rai was elder brother of Guru Harkrishan. Guru Harkrishan decided to go to Delhi since he felt that the "sangat",

Gas lamp

Image
Peter Denton has added a photo to the pool: Gas lamps first came to London in 1807, and the first street (in the world) to be lit was Pall Mall. At one time there were some 60,000 street lights lit by gas in London; today, perhaps surprisingly, there are still around 1,600. This is one of them in Middle Temple, that oasis of expensive tranquillity just off Strand.
