Santa Maria Maggiore is a favorite of art historians. The basilica dates from about 430 AD and contains many original mosaics. Despite several upgrades over the years, the core of the interior survives.The ceiling is a Renaissance re-make and is rumored to contain gold acquired (stolen) from Central America.
