Saint-Cirq-Lapopie (en occitan Sent Circ de la Ppia) est une commune franaise, situe dans le dpartement du Lot dans la rgion Midi-Pyrnes en Quercy.

Le nom de la commune provient de saint Cyr, (occitan : Sent Circ) honor dans l'glise paroissiale qui porte son nom, qui a t frquemment dform en saint Cirgues ou en saint Cirq dans les rgions d'expression occitane. Lapopie, nom de famille, vient de l'occitan "la ppia", fourgon pour tisonner le feu (Mistral)

Il est vraisemblable que l'occupation de cet escarpement rocheux surplombant la rive gauche du Lot, face un cirque de falaises, a tent les hommes ds l'poque gallo-romaine.
La terre de Saint-Cirq appartenait la famille de Cardaillac. En 1229, Bertrand de Cardaillac rendit hommage Raymond comte de Toulouse pour cette terre. Un de ses descendant, nomm lui aussi Bertrand, reut en 1395 le chteau et la terre de Saint-Cirq. Il fut la source des barons de Cardaillac-Saint-Cirq

Plus tard, trois familles se partagrent la seigneurie. Cette triple seigneurie ne fut pas sans poser quelques problmes lors de la croisade contre les Albigeois :

Les Cardaillac se rallirent au comte de Toulouse,
Tandis que les La Popie et les Gourdon s'allirent Simon de Montfort.
En 1251, un des seigneurs, Bernard de Castelnau, fut condamn par l'inquisition la prison perptuelle pour avoir favoris les hrtiques.

Pendant la guerre de Cent Ans, Hugues IV de Cardaillac fut dans le camp franais, il fut un grand technicien de l'artillerie

En 1471, Louis XI fit dmanteler le chteau de Raymond de Cardaillac qui avait pris parti contre lui en faveur du duc de Berry dans la guerre du bien public. Il fut reconstruit sous le rgne de Charles VIII, qui accorda de grandes faveurs Raymond de Cardaillac, pour le ddommager des prjudices causs sous Louis XI1.

Ce vieux schma se renouvela l'poque des guerres de religion : un Cardaillac devint le chef des protestants du Languedoc, tandis qu'un Saint-Sulpice restait catholique.

Amis cependant, ils s'entendirent pour interdire toute violence dans leur cit commune, mais en 1580, rompant la trve, les huguenots s'emparaient du chteau d'en haut, qu'Henri de Navarre fit dmolir[rf. ncessaire].

You could see this church from every part of the island. The church's dome is actually the third largest unsupported dome in the world. Pretty neat huh?

It's definitely the best way to get around Budapest but make sure you buy a ticket, kontroll are getting strict now!

Hadaka Matsuri a traditional autumn festival harking back to the Edo Era, created for the purpose of praying for bumper crops and good fishing.
The highlight of the festival is called Shiofumi when18 floats of local shrines are carried out to sea by brave young men clad only in scanty loincloth to the encouraging cheers of spectators while the patrons of the shrines sings traditional songs. Hoisting the mikoshi onto the shoulders of teams of 25-30 people, they charge into the surf and toss the gigantic mikoshi up and down. And then all the mikoshi are paraded on the shopping streets of the town until 10PM.

Place : Ohara Isumi City, Chiba about 1:45 hrs from Tokyo Station

Taormina is a comune and small town on the east coast of the island of Sicily, Italy, in the Province of Messina, about midway between Messina and Catania. This week had me in Edinburgh with work. I had only been once before, when I was 2...so I didn't remember much!

It really is a fantastic city and as I'm there for a good bit over the next while I'm sure I'll have a few more shots from here in the near future.

This shot is taken from Calton Hill, a well known tourist spot just above Princes Street in the New Town.

Just to the right of the Dugald Stewart Monument you can see the St.Giles Cathedral leading up via the Royal Mile to Edinburgh Castle.

Las Bardenas Reales de Navarra (en euskera Nafarroako Errege Bardeak) son un paraje natural semidesrtico de unas 42.000 ha que se extiende por el sureste de Navarra (Espaa). Sus suelos son de arcillas, yesos y areniscas y han sido erosionados por el agua y el viento creando formas sorprendentes en las que destacan los barrancos, las mesetas de estructura tabular y los cerros solitarios, llamados cabezos. Las Bardenas carecen de ncleos urbanos, su vegetacin es muy escasa y las mltiples corrientes de agua que surcan el territorio tienen un caudal marcadamente irregular, permaneciendo secos la mayor parte del ao. La altitud oscila entre los 280 y los 659 msnm. Las Bardenas se sitan en un punto equidistante entre la cordillera Pirenaica y la Ibrica. Las Bardenas Reales, antigua posesin real, no forman parte de ningn trmino municipal y son propiedad de la Comunidad Foral de Navarra. Veintids municipios y entidades (los "congozantes") forman la Comunidad de Bardenas Reales, una entidad de Derecho Pblico encargada del aprovechamiento del paraje.

I know I promised you some Contemporary Architecture today but I think first I should get some of the 'must see' sights from Copenhagen out of the way. This is the famous 'Little Mermaid', despite its name everyone is always surprised at just how little it is. Still as a travel icon for the city it is one of those shots near the top of the list (and therefore one of the shots most likely to sell) but once you've got them 'in the bag' then is possible to move onto more interesting subjects.

A Year Ago...

It's hard to believe that only a year ago today we were at our first Almabtrieb festival in Austria.

At the time, it was also our first Bavarian festival, and we had never seen anything like it. Seven hundred and fifty cows trudging through the town, with proud family members walking beside. All the way from the babies who had to be carried to the old men with their canes. Bringing the animals home. Down from the cold to warmth.

And the food. Why hadn't anyone ever told us that the food was like this at Bavarian festivals? The cakes were to die for, and you would have thought a chef had been slaving away for weeks with how good everything was-and hardly any of it was fried, either. =)

It was a great experience. And a great way to start the fall off, too.

The large active crater of Mount Naka-dake, one of the peaks of Mount Aso, the largest active volcano in Japan. If you like, imagine the heavy stench of sulfur that accompanied this view. This crater is the only one in the Aso caldera (one of the largest in the world) that has been active during the last 70 years. On the left side of the photo, little reinforced concrete structures can be seen, which were built to protect people following a sudden eruption in 1958 that killed 12 visitors to the crater.

Continuing to explore legacy lenses on the Panny G1 and soon the EPL-2 has proven to be a quite effective method during my photo walks.

The setup is simple. I use "zone focus" at 5-8ft at f/5.8 or 8 and I'm ready to hit the streets.

Again, here's my minimal post processing experiment which by the way, is not even its final stages and I still have a lot to apply to these images.

Any tips or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. As usual thanks for all the love and keep shooting folks, you're best image is only a click away.

A popular tourist destination, Shimla is often referred to as the "Queen of Hills," a term coined by the British. Located in the north-west Himalayas at an average altitude of 2,205 metres (7,234 ft), the city of Shimla, draped in forests of pine, rhododendron, and oak, experiences pleasant summers and cold, snowy winters. The city is famous for its buildings styled in tudorbethan and neo-gothic architecture dating from the colonial era. Shimla is connected to the city of Kalka by one of the longest narrow gauge railway routes still operating in India, the Kalka-Shimla Railway. Shimla is approximately 100 km (68 miles) from Chandigarh, the nearest major city, and 365 km (226 miles) from New Delhi, the national capital. The city is named after the goddess Shyamala Devi, an incarnation of the Hindu Goddess Kali.

From Wikipedia : "Instead of stairs, a 7.5-turn spiral ramp forms the only access way to the towertop observatory as well as the Library Hall and the Bell-Ringer's Loft, both located above the church. The ramp turns 7.5 times around the hollow masonry core of the tower before reaching the observation deck and observatory at the top, on the way also affording access to the Library Hall as well as the Ringer's Loft. This design was chosen to allow a horse and carriage to reach the library, moving books in and out of the library as well as transporting heavy and sensitive instruments to the observatory.

The winding corridor has a length of 210 m, climbing 3.74m per turn. Along the outer wall the corridor has a length of 257.5m and a grade of 10%, while along the wall of the inner core the corridor is only 85.5m long but has a grade of 33%."

The "Gadaba" are one of the very primitive and colourful tribes of Orissa (one of the states of India). Concentrated in the south-westen hills of the state, their population is estimated at 80.000. Their economic life is mainly centred around agriculture. Besides, it is supplemented by the collection of forest produces, hunting and fishing. They believe in many gods and goddesses, the main one being Thakurani...and also ghosts and spirits. Through the year, they celebrate many festivals with sincerity, devotion and fear. Gadaba being very poor people, these festivities are celebrated in a simple way. But with joy and happiness...and alcohol and dancing for days. The "Dhemsha" dance in particular is renowned in the region.
